To assess whether LPS affects expression of BDNF (Fig. 4b), mice were treated for 30 days with i.p. of LPS or vehicle alone. At a dose of 10 or 24 mg/kg, LPS produced a significant and selective increase in the expression of BDNF hippocampal slices from 3-mg-LPS-treated mice; the total percentage of mice expressing BDNF was significantly higher (Fig. 4c and Supplementary Fig. 23a, b).
